Bach’s famous program trio (‘Sanguineus und Melancholicus’) has generated much debate. A quintessential example of eighteenth-century dialogue-in-tone, the work nonetheless received mixed reviews and Bach refrained from repeating it. It would be unfair to pass judgment on Bach’s contemporaries, however, since the work is not devoid of ambiguities.
