CFP: Woodstock 50--Stardust and the Devil's Bargain (Berklee College of Music, April 5 - 7, 2019)

Woodstock 50: Stardust and the Devil’s Bargain Submission deadline: October 15 April 5-7, 2019 berklee.edu/woodstock50 Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA) In August of 1969, a dairy farm in the state of New York hosted a pivotal moment in the history of pop music. Taking place only two years after the "Summer of Love” and one year after the tumultuous events of 1968, the Woodstock Music and Art Fair put an exclamation point on the transformational decade of the 1960s. Joni Mitchell did not attend Woodstock, but her song of the same name captures an opposition inherent to the turbulent and divisive era. “We are stardust...caught in the devil’s bargain,” Mitchell sings, “...and we’ve got to get ourselves back to the garden.” The committee hopes that these evocative lyrics inspire a similarly wide-ranging set of proposals. Berklee's Liberal Arts Department is pleased to announce a conference marking the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. We are soliciting proposals on a...

Upcoming Conferences & Festivals: Bach, Clemens non Papa, Phillipe de Vitry

Clark University, late September through mid-November: Bach to Bach  Bach’s Art of Fugue in Color Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in Razzo Hall Johann Sebastian’s Bach’s Art of Fugue is one of his last great masterpieces.  As Bach’s final, encyclopedic exploration of the art and science of counterpoint and fugue, it has left a great legacy to the future.  The final fugue was left unfinished at the composer’s death, and has thus posed fascinating riddles ever since.  And the performance of this highly intricate, deeply beautiful score presents a wonderful series of challenges and opportunities to performers and listeners alike.  This performance will embrace and celebrate Bach’s Art of Fugue. Featuring Frances Conover Fitch with Arcadia Viols and guest instrumentalists   In addition, Frances Conover Fitch and members of the Arcadia Viols will offer a pre-concert demonstration for students at 4:00 in Razzo Ha...

Introducing: The New England Musicology Conference Calendar

We are lucky enough to boast a wide variety and great number of musicological happenings in the region of our chapter. Unfortunately, there have been an increasing number of conflicts between institutional conferences and chapter meetings, as well as meetings of related societies. With an eye toward avoiding these conflicts, I have established a calendar (embedded below).  I will maintain the calendar which will have the chapter meetings of the New England Conference of Music Theorists, New England Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology, as well as our own. I will include departmental conferences and symposia as I hear of them. So, I need your help! If you are scheduling a musicology conference, please check for conflicts on this calendar. More importantly, if you are hosting a musicology (or related) conference, PLEASE e-mail ams.newengland@gmail.com ASAP. I will be happy to add it to the calendar. I'm hoping this will foster increased participation in the chapter, as well...

A few reflections on Beyond Notation: An Earle Brown Symposium

Note: If you attend a symposium or conference in New England, please consider submitting a short report for publication on this blog. You may send your submission to rebecca dot marchand at gmail dot com. ------- Beyond Notation: An Earle Brown Symposium January 18 & 19, 2013 Northeastern University I'm glad to say it was teaching that kept me from attending the first day of Beyond Notation: An Earle Brown Symposium at Northeastern University, rather than some less noble excuse. I did attend many of the events on Saturday, however, and the day concluded with an extraordinary concert by the Callithumpian Consort . I offer a few reflections here, but this is by no means an exhaustive report on all events of the symposium, nor even all the events I attended.  Richard Toop's keynote offerings (introduced via an audio recording of Toop and then read by Rebecca Kim) on lyricism in Brown's "Centering" (1973) gave me a deep appreciation for Ethan Woo...
